Award-winning author Jane Smiley
On Thursday evening conference participants will have the opportunity to see award-winning author Jane Smiley at
a great price. Coming to WLA in Spokane this year is a treat
because one of the best literary festivals in WA state happens the same weekend as our conference.
Eastern WA University’s Get Lit! Festival will be in full swing during our conference, giving attendees
the opportunity to take in some excellent literary events. This year, we’ve partnered with them so
that conference attendees can attend author Jane Smiley’s presentation for a substantially discounted rate.
Get Lit! has also promised discounts to their other events for conference attendees.
The full schedule is available at
http://www.ewu.edu/getlit/.
Tickets are $10 until March 4, $15 after that and $20 if you wait until conference time.
Thursday, April 16, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Bing Theatre, 901 W. Sprague Avenue

Jan Sanders, Keynote Breakfast Speaker. Jan Sanders’ involvement in WLA conferences is almost legendary
(you may have heard of the unscheduled beer run during the 2004 conference in Wenatchee), the point being
that when Jan is involved it’s about quality and knowledge but it’s also imbued with a sense of fun. If you
attended the 2008 PLA conference you’ll surely agree that it was an immense learning opportunity and also a
lot of fun. Jan is the immediate past president of PLA and a former library director for Spokane Public
Library. She now is library director at the Pasadena Public Library.
Thursday, April 16, 7:30 - 9:00 am
Jan's presentation is included in your conference registration.

Paula Poundstone says, in her public service announcement for
FOLUSA (Friends of Libraries USA), that she felt her relationship with
libraries was unbalanced because she wasn’t giving back; she could borrow all the books and videos she wanted
but wondered what was she giving to the library? As FOLUSA spokeswoman she certainly is giving back and
helping Friends’ groups nationwide raise money for their libraries. The other thing she gives us is
laughter. We’re fortunate to bring her to WLA 2009.
See Paula's site for more information about her.
Friday, April 17, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Tickets: $50 for conference attendees (includes the delicious banquet dinner)
Also available to non-conference attendees for $75.

Jim Rettig, University Librarian at the University of Richmond, Virginia, is the President
of the American Library Association. Having served ALA and three of its divisions for more
than thirty years, he developed a very popular program addressing three critical issues:
advocacy for all types of libraries, diversity, and member participation.
ALA members and staff are currently working in all of these areas; we can expect Mr. Rettig to bring us up to date on their progress.
